Writer's Notebook

This year, your child will be maintaining a writer’s notebook.  A writer’s notebook is a tool where your child experiments with his or her writing and gathers ideas (seeds) in a non-threatening way.  The notebook includes topics that the writer may like to explore more extensively someday.  This is one component of writer’s workshop and it is the place where students select topics to write about.  Quality writing is hard work.  Proficient writers write frequently, and regularly review and revise their writing.  My goal is to help your child embrace writing and use it as a tool to express their thoughts and opinions.

Periodically, your child will be assigned to write independently in his or her notebook for homework.  Please monitor your child’s writing habits.  This can be accomplished when you sign and review your child’s Homework Notebook each night.  The more your child thinks and writes about his or her thoughts, the stronger his or her writing skills will become and the easier it will be to write.  This will help your child become more literate throughout his or her academic career and life.
