A school is more than a concrete structure with classrooms, halls, windows and walls.   School is a community that encompasses students, parents, and teachers, as well as physical and social surroundings. To create a nurturing, enjoyable and thinking working environment, our class has established a set of rules and results for behavior.  All of our rules revolve around one theme:

RESPECT

Rules:

Follow directions the first time given.

  1. Treat others the way you want to be treated.
  2. Speak to others using appropriate language.  (No put-downs)
    1. Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself.
    2. Respect others’ property
  3. Raise your hand to participate.
    1. Listen to others.
    2. Share, participate, & do your job.
    3. Don’t talk, move around the room, or leave when others are speaking.

Results:  If a student chooses not to follow a rule, below are the results:

Occurrence/Result

1st  “Take a minute” Behavior Journal Teacher*

2nd “Take five” Behavior Journal Teacher*

3rd “Take ten” Behavior Journal Parent **

4th Call to parent

5th Meet with principal

* Behavior Journal Teacher:  The student will take a minute (or five minutes) to write a note to me stating what he/she did, how he/she will improve, and the date.  I will save these.

** Behavior Journal Parent:  The student will write a note to his/her parent stating what he/she did, how he/she will improve, and the date.  This needs to be signed by the parent and returned to school.

The intent of this plan is not to be punitive.  Rather, writing helps the students think, focus, and learn from their actions.  This should help them become responsible citizens and realize that they have a choice to control their behavior. Students that exhibit positive behavior will be rewarded with praise and other special privileges.  Severe behavior issues, such as fighting, dishonesty, and verbal abuse will be addressed individually.  In those cases, the school administration needs to be notified.
