Homework Plan
Homework is a valuable classroom extension. It reinforces skills and concepts, teaches responsibility, and helps students think and develop excellent study/work habits. I know that we both want to help your child develop strong independent homework habits. Let’s consistently encourage them to assume responsibility.
When will homework be assigned? Homework will be assigned each night. Assignments should take between 45 minutes and 1 hour to complete each night and will probably take less time. Studying for tests and special projects will require additional time. The Homework Notebook will list upcoming assignments and tests so your child can plan accordingly.
What are the student’s responsibilities? Students should copy the homework board accurately. Students should do their best on their homework. Students should do the work on their own and only ask for help after they have tried their best. All assignments should be neat, complete, and timely.
What are the teacher’s responsibilities? The teacher will assign and review the homework and note the quality and timeliness. Praise and incentives will be provided for exemplary and consistent work. Homework will be a component of the grading process.
What are the parent’s responsibilities? Parents should help the student set a schedule and provide supplies, a quiet work area, and praise and support. Each evening, they should read and sign the assignment page in the student’s Homework Notebook.
What if a student chooses not to complete a homework assignments? If students choose not to complete their homework, I will ask the parents to check and sign each assignment, individually. If a student still chooses not to complete his or her homework, he or she also chooses to lose certain privileges. If the student chooses to make up the assignment the next day, his or her homework will be accepted but marked late. Parents will be contacted if owed assignments become excessive.
If there is a legitimate reason why a student is not able to complete homework, please send a note to me the day the assignment is due stating the reason. The note needs to be signed by the parent or guardian. The homework assignment still needs to be completed by an agreed upon date.
If the student is absent, he or she is expected to get the assignment from a classmate’s homework book. Completed assignments are due two days after returning to school. Please write a note in your child’s Homework Notebook for special circumstances.
