Reading Logs
Reading Log :
To strengthen reading skills, your child should spend 15 minutes each night reading independently. Throughout the year, your child will choose books at their level (from the school or public library, from their home, or books that you may purchase) which they should be reading each evening. Independent reading helps build comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Proficient readers use a variety of strategies including asking themselves questions, creating an image in their mind, drawing inferences, predicting, and making connections to themselves, other text, and their world. My goal is to ensure your child becomes a life-long reader.
Each night, your child will be asked to complete a homework reading log. It includes a place to list the book title, author, and pages read. In addition, based on that night’s reading it asks the student to write what it was mostly about (main idea (Please don’t retell the story, summarize it!)) and specific thoughts that he or she had while reading. Complete sentences need to be used in the log, including adequate details to support the thoughts your child had (say it-support it). Reflecting on reading can help strengthen both literal and inferential comprehension. I will be reviewing these logs regularly. Please make sure your child completes these time.
Please monitor your child’s reading habits. This can be accomplished when you sign and review your child’s Homework Notebook each night. Independent reading should be performed at least Monday through Friday for the entire year. The more your child reads and reflects on his or her reading, the stronger his or her literacy attitudes and skills will become. This will aid your child throughout his or her academic career and life.
