READING RESPONSE FAQ

1) Question: Does my child need to finish a book prior to selecting a question?

Answer:  No. The questions are designed to help your child think and question as he or she reads. In addition, some of the questions were created to have your child predict, make connections, and create a mental image in his or her mind. These skills help build stronger readers.

2) Question: What type of my book should my child read?

Answer:  Most likely, each of us possesses different reading skills. The key is for your child to select a book that is of interest and is "just right" for his or her ability. "Just right" books are those that your child can understand well and enjoy. Your child should be able to read the book smoothly and has only a few places where he or she needs to think more about the meaning.

3) Question: Does this assignment need to be submitted in cursive (script)?

Answer:  I would like the student to try this assignment in script (cursive).  It is not required.  If it becomes too difficult for your child, please have your child use his or her best handwriting. Throughout the year we will continue to practice cursive writing.

4) Question:  How many prompts (questions) does my child need to choose for each response?

Answer:  For each reading response your child should choose only one (1) prompt from the list and answer it fully in at least three paragraphs (at least five sentences (introduction, three details and a conclusion) in each paragraph).  Your child should not retell the story.  The idea is to encourage your child to think and use details from the story to support his or her views.
